About Biscuits

Download a fact sheet 'About Biscuits / About GirlGuidingNZ Wellington' (PDF).

Guide Biscuits were introduced into New Zealand in 1957.

The first biscuits were made by Cadbury Fry Hudson and sold in large square tins. Cadbury Fry Hudson produced the biscuits until 1990, when it was bought out by Britannia Brands (Griffins). Griffin's Foods Limited (now owned by Danone Group) continues to produce the biscuits today.

The recipe for Guide Biscuits was developed by staff at Cadbury Fry Hudson and remains the same today. It is unique to GirlGuiding New Zealand.

Choc biscuits were introduced in 1999 - the same biscuit recipe, but the base of the biscuits is dipped in choc - this has added a new and popular taste to the traditional biscuit.

Guide Minis were introduced in 2003 - again the same biscuit recipe, dipped in chocolate, but aimed at children - the biscuits have 'fun characters' stamped on them which children will recognise.

Biscuits were originally sold by girls knocking on doors. Changes in society such as weekend shopping, pressure from other activities and security mean biscuits are more likely today to be sold in shopping centres, at road-side stalls, by pre-order form through businesses and social clubs.

Funds raised through the sale of biscuits are used in the area and communities where they're sold. This enabled the organisation to be self-funding.

A small percentage of funds are retained by the regional and national organisations to assist in offering girls more opportunities to extend their experiences, enjoy activities with their peers and develop personal qualities and values which help them make a difference in the world.
